Known as “The Olympics of Sportfishing” the International Game Fishing Association (IGFA) Offshore World Championship pits proven teams of sportsfishermen against each other in a 4 day event with strict rules and substantial prizes. In order to participate in the World Championship, the team must have won one of the 110 qualifying tournaments held in 35 different countries around the world. Qualifying entries for the World Championship have seen as many as 70 teams representing 32 countries. The event has become one of the most prestigious blue-water sportfishing events on the planet. Winners of the team awards are presented with distinctive Championship Rings that identify team members to all other sportsfishing enthusiasts that they among the sport’s elite. Heaviest Tuna, Heaviest Dorado and Heaviest Wahoo earn special prizes along with the honors presented for various billfish categories. The nearly week-long event culminates in a festive awards ceremony and gala. Besides the thrill of fishing for heavy world class fish, the participants in the World Championship find the event is equally about the sportsmanship and developing friendships with sportfishing enthusiasts from around the globe.
